Bookshelf

One of my New Year's Resolutions is to read more. I'm working on my book list: 97 Books To Read in 2010, and keeping track using Shelfari and most books come from the library. In January I read 4 books.

Too bad I started off with Wolf Hall (Hilary Mantel), which I didn't finish. It's historical fiction about the time of Henry the 8th, Thomas Cromwell, Anne Bolyean & all the drama surrounding them. This is a THICK book with MANY characters and since I'm not really into historical fiction, it was a hard read for me. I hate not finishing books but after 2 weeks, I needed to move on. I'll finish it up towards the end of the year.

I moved on to something completely different, Relentless (Dean Koontz). Koontz is my man - I've read every book (I think), and I have to admit - some of his latest books have not left me enthralled. But this one was good. So worthy. The ending was a tad anti-climatic to me, but not much and the story was really interesting and held my attention the whole way through.

Devil's Alphabet (Daryl Gregory) was next. Weird story. Folks in a town were transformed (mutated) by a disease that only affected that town. Some people weren't changed, and this is the story of one such man who moved away and then comes back for a funeral - and then the shit hits the fan - except that's a tad more dramatic than the book. Overall - I say ... meh. The book was a bit dull despite it's promise.

Finally, I started Cry of the Sloth (Sam Savage), but didn't finish it until February. It's written about a dude who is lazy as hell. The writing style is interesting, the book - not so much. But I somehow think that's the point. Dude acted like how most people who don't recognize their part in their demise do - clueless & depressed. I kind of wish there was more of a dramatic ending - but again, maybe that was the point.

Overall, there was 1 book that I loved, but it was by an author I read a lot of. The other 3 I probably would have never picked on my own, and I can't say I was really wowed by them. The Devil's Alphabet though is one I will not forget because the story was so creepy, and Cry of the Sloth I will probably remember on my more depressed days.
