{Bloggers Recommend} Favorite Audiobooks From Various Genres

Listen Up! It's Audiobook Week 2012 is an event hosted by Devourer of Books and which I'm participating in this week. So, our Bloggers Recommend Series is, of course, all about audiobooks today. As usual - 1 Question - 5 Answers - from 5 Bloggers (sometimes more).

{Bloggers Recommend} Favorite Audiobooks From Various Genres

Jennifer @ Literate Housewife
Paul is Undead by Alan Goldsher, narrated by Simon Vance. I do not like zombie books and I'm not a huge Beatles fan, so this book isn't something I would have ordinarily read. That is what is so great about audiobooks. I gave it a chance because I love the narrator and was rewarded with one of the best reading experiences of my life. {Review}

Paul is Undead (Book)Raising Stony Mayhall (Book)

Bob @ The Guilded Earlobe
Raising Stony Mayhall by Daryl Gregory, narrated by David Marantz. This is one of my favorite most under-appreciated zombie audiobooks and one I recommend often to non-zombie fans. Raising Stony Mayhall is a Forrest Gump-like adventure following one undead character as he deals with the zombie underground, secret government labs, and eventual coming outbreak. While this is David Marantz' first audiobook narration, he reads it like a veteran, and gives a wonderful performance. {Review}
Paul @ The Audiobook Reviewer
Every time I want to be entertained from an audiobook I go to the Zombie genre. Whether it be funny, scarey, intense or sadistic, zombie audiobooks exploit something that you find uncomfortable and you will not be able to stop listening. The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor Fred Berman by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga, narrated by Fred Berman in particular is excellent. Pure, unadulterated, original, breathtaking and enough surprises to keep you guessing. {Review}

The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor (Book)The Road (Book)

Steven @ Audiobook Heaven
The post-apocalyptic genre of fiction seems to be growing rapidly in popularity among writers and readers, and it is quickly becoming a favorite of mine as well. One of the first novels I read from this genre was The Road by Cormac McCarthy, narrated by Tom Stechschulte and it is still my very favorite. Someone once said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but McCarthy's simple language in this compact novel painted a thousand images upon my mind. His descriptions of a bleak, gray, lifeless landscape following a nuclear holocaust, and the aimlessly wandering survivors who are just trying to figure out how to live in it, have remained etched upon my mind even after more than a year. {Review}
Emily @ Emily's Reading Room
Shadows on the Moon by Zoe Marriott, narrated by Amy Rubinate is a retelling of Cinderella in a setting based on feudal Japan. I hope you're nodding your head at this point, because that description alone caught me. This is definitely a dark twist on Cinderella, but one that will honestly rip your heart out. Amy Rubinate's narration is one of the best I've ever listened to, and really brings to life the amazing setting and incredibly rich characters. {Review}

Shadows on the Moon (Book)The Goose Girl (Book)

From Alyssa @ The Reader's Refuge
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. In The Goose Girl, Hale turns a mediocre fairy tale into a young adult book that will speak to people of all ages and generations. To add to the awesomeness, it's a Full Cast Audio production, which means there is a different narrator for each character, really bringing the story to life. Dealing with themes such as friendship and finding one's place in the world, this will always be among my favorite books of all time. {Review}
Do you have any recommendations to add to this list? I haven't read any of the ones mentioned, but I'm looking forward to trying a few.

I swear, audiobook week is killing me!! Lol! There have been so many amazing suggestions, I can't keep up! :)

In the YA category I would mention:

Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos (read by the author) as well as his autobiographical work Hole in My Life, also read by him. He is an entertaining reader and his fiction and nonfiction works are laden with humor.

Also The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Gaiman is a very adept narrator and puts such heart into the reading of his work. I would recommend his reading of Stardust as well.

Outside of YA I would recommend:

Simon Armitage's reading of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. It is a lyrical work and he presents it beautifully.

Gary Sinese reading John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley.

I have to comment on The Road! I also listened to this one on audio and agree that it was fantastic. BUT it also made me laugh (and that story isn't funny) because the father character says the word "yes" all the time in response to questions from his son and the way the reader said this word was bizarre (very drawn out for a three letter, one syllable word). Every time he said it I would laugh. And that was a lot.

Great picks! I haven't heard of a lot of these ones, but I'm sure I'll add some to my TBL list. :)

Thanks for the suggestions!

I would have to 100% agree with Kim above. I have added soooo many to the TBL list that I need to start listening at home and not just in the car. LOL! I was thinking about reading Shadow on the Moon but it may be a listen now.
