My 10 Beach Reads of Summer 2012

If my vacation days consist of relaxing & reading on a beach for days on end, then I'm taking books from my shelves that haven't been read yet. I have OCD when it comes to unfinished business and that's what un-read books in my house feel like. Here's a list of 10 books that I hope to get through by ... by the time summer 2013 rolls around! And yes, some of them are horror ... because I prefer my scary reads when there is an abundance of daylight!

My 10 Beach Reads of Summer 2012 {Or 10 UnRead Books on My Shelves}

Rot and Ruin (Book)Dust and Decay (Book)

Rot & Ruin, Jonathan Maberry. In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn't want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash--but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human.

Dust & Decay, Jonathan Maberry. In post-apocalyptic America, 15-year-old Benny Imura and his friends set out into the great Rot & Ruin hoping to find a better future but are soon pitted against zombies, wild animals, insane murderers, and the horrors of Gameland.

Storm of Swords (Book)Feast for Crows (Book)

Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3), George R. R. Marin. Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. (Amazon| Goodreads)

A Feast For Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3), George R. R. Martin. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. But it's not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters of the Seven Kingdoms gather. (Amazon| Goodreads)

Cosmic Forces (Book)Stephen King 11-22-63

Cosmic Forces, Gregory Lamberson. Private investigator Jake Helman has battled a demon, his minions, the walking dead, and beings from the dimensions of the Sphere of Light and the Dark Realm. Now, with earthly and otherworldly forces marshaled against him, Jake battles human assassins and supernatural creatures in his quest to uncover the mystery behind the Order of Avademe and a monster willing to destroy heaven and hell to rule the earth. (Goodreads)

11/22/63 Stephen King. November 22nd, 1963 was a rapid-fire sequence of indelible moments: Shots ring out; a president slumped over; a race to the Dallas hospital; an announcement, blood still fresh on the First Lady's dress. But what if President John F. Kennedy didn't have to die; if somehow his assassin could have been thwarted? For Maine schoolteacher Jake Epping, those hypothetical what if's become real possibilities when he walks through a portal to the past. (Goodreads)

Empress of the Seven Hills (Book)A Rogue By Any Other Name (Book)

Empress of the Seven Hills, Kate Quinn. Powerful, prosperous, and expanding ever farther into the untamed world, the Roman Empire has reached its zenith under the rule of the beloved Emperor Trajan. But neither Trajan nor his reign can last forever. (Goodreads)

A Rogue By Any Other Name, Sara MacLean. A decade ago, the Marquess of Bourne was cast from society with nothing but his title. Now a partner in London's most exclusive gaming hell, the cold, ruthless Bourne will do whatever it takes to regain his inheritance--including marrying perfect, proper Lady Penelope Marbury. (Goodreads)

Salvage the Bones (Book)The Immortal Rules (Book)

Salvage the Bones, Jesmyn Ward. A hurricane is building over the Gulf of Mexico, threatening the coastal town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, and Esch's father is growing concerned. A hard drinker, largely absent, he doesn't show concern for much else. Esch and her three brothers are stocking food, but there isn't much to save. Lately, Esch can't keep down what food she gets; she's fourteen and pregnant. Her brother Skeetah is sneaking scraps for his prized pitbull's new litter, dying one by one in the dirt. Meanwhile, brothers Randall and Junior try to stake their claim in a family long on child's play and short on parenting.(Goodreads. )

The Immortal Rules, Julie Kagawa. Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten. Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked and given the ultimate choice. DieĀ… or become one of the monsters. (Goodreads)

Love this list! It seems my summer reading list just keeps getting longer and longer. I've got several unread books sitting on the shelf gathering dust so I really need to get to those first but I'm looking forward to more of Martin's series too.

Love your list! I'm reading Stephen Kings book right now and it's really good!! 700 pages, so it will probably be the only book on the beach for me this summer ;)

Well you are definitely going to get your exercise on that beach! Some of those are weighty tomes, even in paperback format!

I've been wanting to read the 2011 National Book Award Winning, Salvage the Bones. It sounds fantastic.

This is not fair! I've seen The Immortal Rules everywhere and can't get my hands on it because I'm trying to spend less money on books ;/ But this is a great list - a bit different from what I would've expected!

I can't believe I forgot to include ASoIaF! And I actually did read the second and third in the series at the beach on Cape Cod! Great list.

Thanks for sharing your choices!

That's an interesting thought--taking horror to the beach to read in daylight. I suppose that might work, as long as you're not reading JAWS... ;)

Great picks! I loved Rot&Ruin. And you just reminded me to read the next book

Btw, I like dark books as beach reads, too :)

Great list! I just finished Rot and Ruin and Game of Thrones! Both books were absolutely PHENOMENAL! I cannot wait to get the sequels to both

I've heard of a few, but haven't read any of them. I do have The Immortal Rules out from the library right now, I couldn't wait for it to come in. So I'll be reading that this week, I think.

I heard of Savage the Bones at an OLC talk, but the presenter didn't say a lot on it. I'll be curious to find out what you think of it.

Wow, these are almost all new to me! The only one I've heard of is the Immortal Rules... and I can't WAIT to read it!! :)

Haven't read any of these BUT really want to get my hands on The Immortal Rules!

Salvage the Bones was a really great read, but I don't know that I would want to read it on the beach! That is a heavy book, despite it slim size.
