Dystopian Book List

Dystopian novels are rocking my world right now. I know some people say they are too many of them, and they are trying too hard to be The Hunger Games - but whatevs! The few I've read have been really good - and I plan to read more before the year is out.

10 Hot Dystopian Novels {on my 2012 Reading List}

DivergentInsurgent

Divergent, Veronica Roth. Beatrice "Tris" Prior has reached the fateful age of sixteen, the stage at which teenagers in Veronica Roth's dystopian Chicago must select which of five factions to join for life. Each faction represents a virtue: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. To the surprise of herself and her selfless Abnegation family, she chooses Dauntless, the path of courage. Her choice exposes her to the demanding, violent initiation rites of this group, but it also threatens to expose a personal secret that could place her in mortal danger. Veronica Roth's young adult Divergent trilogy launches with a captivating adventure about love and loyalty playing out under most extreme circumstances.

Insurgent (Divergent #2), Veronica Roth (May 2012).
One choice can transform you, or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves - and herself - while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

When She WokeLegend

When She Woke, Hillary Jordan. Hannah Payne's life has been devoted to church and family. But after she's convicted of murder, she awakens to a nightmarish new life. She finds herself lying on a table in a bare room, covered only by a paper gown, with cameras broadcasting her every move to millions at home, for whom observing new Chromes - criminals whose skin color has been genetically altered to match the class of their crime - is a sinister form of entertainment.

Legend, Marie Lu. What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

Ready Player One (Book)Ship Breaker

Ready Player One, Ernest Cline. It's the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets. And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world.

Ship Breaker, Paolo Bacigalupi. In America's Gulf Coast region, where grounded oil tankers are being broken down for parts, Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew, scavenging for copper wiring just to make quota--and hopefully live to see another day. But when, by luck or chance, he discovers an exquisite clipper ship beached during a recent hurricane, Nailer faces the most important decision of his life: Strip the ship for all it's worth or rescue its lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who could lead him to a better life.

Parable of the SowerKnife of Never Letting Go

Parable of the Sower, Octavia E. Butler. In a time of urban squalor, rampant violence, and deadly decay, anarchy rules. But for Lauren Olamina, a new hope is dawning when she leaves the chaos of L.A. and flees north with a tiny band of followers.

The Knife of Never Letting Go, Patrick Ness. Prentisstown isn't like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in an overwhelming, never-ending stream of Noise. Just a month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd and his dog, Manchee - whose thoughts Todd can hear too, whether he wants to or not - stumble upon an area of complete silence. They find that in a town where privacy is impossible, something terrible has been hidden - a secret so awful that Todd and Manchee must run for their lives. But how do you escape when your pursuers can hear your every thought?

Pure (Book)A Million Suns

Pure, Julianna Baggott. There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. But when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her.

A Million Suns (Across the Universe #2), Beth Revis. Godspeed was fueled by lies. Now it is ruled by chaos. It's been three months since Amy was unplugged. The life she always knew is over. And everywhere she looks, she sees the walls of the spaceship Godspeed. But there may just be hope: Elder has assumed leadership of the ship. They must work together to unlock a puzzle that was set in motion hundreds of years earlier, unable to fight the romance that's growing between them and the chaos that threatens to tear them apart.

Have you read any of these yet? What did you think?

Great list! I've read other works by Octavia Butler and Paolo Bacigalupi and really enjoyed them. "When She Woke" has also been in my TBR pile for a while. Thanks for sharing your list, and if you're interested in seeing a similar list about sci-fi, please check out mine! :)

LOVED Divergent, liked Legend, and I thought When She Woke was fantastic as well. I would add the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld and the Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins

"Legend" is currently being read by a group I like on goodreads. I tried the sample of "When She Woke," to no avail. Octavia Butler's is definitely on my "to read" list.
"Knife of Never Letting Go" sounds great. I hope you've read "Far North" before. The best! Thanks for your cool list.

I've been dying to read When She Woke--it sounds like the Scarlet Letter meets the Handmaid's Tale. Octavia Butler has been on my TBR for ages, too.

I'm not a huge fan of Oliver so far, but I do have Pandemonium on my TBR shelf...

"The Knife of Letting of Never Letting Go" sounds very intriguing and the cover looks very creepy.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I, too, LOOOOVE dystopian. I have to deliberatly choose other genres from the library because I could read solely dystopian and be perfectly happy. :) Veronica Roth rocks my world!!! Insurgent will definitely be a book I head to my local store and purchase at midnight because I won't be able to live with myself knowing that it's out there, even for a few hours, and I don't own it yet.
