10 Must-See Book To Movie Adaptations in 2012

Do you read books & watch the movie? For me, it's usually one or the other, but there are a few exceptions I'm looking forward to this year.

10 Must See Book To Movie Adaptations in 2012

The Hunger Games (Movie)

The Hunger Games

Based on: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
Summary: Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister's place for the latest match.
Release Date: March 23, 2012

The book is excellent, and I thought the movie was pretty good - but the book is way better than the movie.

Snow White and the Huntsman

Snow White and The Huntsman

Based on: Classic Snow White fairytale
Summary: In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen.
Release Date: June 1st, 2012
Links: Movie Trailer on IMDb
Finally, Snow White as a bad-ass ... I might not go to the movies to see this, but lucky for me, I have a $3 movie theater near me that gets movies a little later than the regular box office.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Based on: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
Summary: Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, discovers vampires are planning to take over the United States. He makes it his mission to eliminate them.
Release Date: June 22nd, 2012
Links: Movie Trailer on IMDb | Book reviews on Goodreads | Amazon
Waiting on the DVD for this one, but I plan on reading the book soon.

The Bourne Legacy

The Bourne Legacy (movie)Based On: The Bourne series by Robert Ludlum
Summary: There as never just one. A story centered on a new CIA operative in the universe based on Robert Ludlum's novels.
Release Date: Aug 3, 2012
Links: Movie Trailer on IMDb | Book reviews on Goodreads | Amazon
My dad is the person who is responsible for me loving reading, and one of the authors he introduced me to is Robert Ludlum and I have read almost everything by him, including The Bourne Trilogy, which I loved. The movies were fantastic too so naturally, I'm going to watch this on opening night.

Odd Thomas

Odd Thomas

Based on: Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz
Summary: In a California desert town, a short-order cook with clairvoyant abilities encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark, threatening forces.
Release Date: Oct 3, 2012
Links: Book reviews on Goodreads | Amazon
I loved this book, and think it will translate nicely to the big screen. I'll probably re-read this and more in the series before I watch the movie - maybe opening weekend.

I Alex Cross

Alex Cross

Based on: I, Alex Cross by James Patterson
Summary: After Washington DC detective Alex Cross is told that a family member has been murdered, he vows to track down the killer. He soon discovers that she was not his first victim and that things are not what they seem.
Release Date: Oct 23, 2012
Links: Book reviews on Goodreads | Amazon
Morgan Freeman was hella good as Alex Cross in the first 2 movies, Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, and I CANNOT picture Tyler Perry in this role... so this is one I have to see - opening weekend.

Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas

Based on: Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell
Summary: An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.
Release Date: Oct 26, 2012
Links: Movie Trailer on IMDb | Book reviews on Goodreads | Amazon
I have seen rave reviews of the book, so I'm excited to both read it, and see the movie when it comes out.

Twilight Breaking Dawn (Movie)

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part 2)

Based on: Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer
Summary: After the birth of Renesmee, the Cullens gather other vampire clans in order to protect the child from a false allegation that puts the family in front of the Volturi.
Release Date: 16th November 2012
Links: Movie Trailer on IMDb | Book reviews on Goodreads| Amazon
To be honest, I haven't read the books and still debating whether I should or not. And I'll probably wait until this movie is free on the tele.

The Hobbit

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Based on: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Summary: A curious Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, journeys to the Lonely Mountain with a vigorous group of Dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen from them by the dragon Smaug.
Release Date: Dec 14, 2012
Links: Movie Trailer on IMDb | Goodreads | Amazon
The Lord of The Rings Trilogy was so GOOD that I MUST read this book & watch the movie - opening night!

Life of Pi

Life of Pi

Based On:
Summary: The story of an Indian boy named Pi, a zookeeper's son who finds himself in the company of a hyena, zebra, orangutan, and a Bengal tiger after a shipwreck sets them adrift in the Pacific Ocean.
Release Date: Dec 21, 2012
Links: Book reviews on Goodreads | Amazon
I might wait for this one to come out on DVD, but it's a book I definitely want to read.

I'm most looking forward to seeing The Bourne Legacy, Odd Thomas & The Hobbit. Which book-based movie are you most looking forward to this year.

I'm looking forward to Snow White and the next Bourne movie as well. Sad that Matt Damon won't be in it, but excited about Jeremy Renner, for sure!

I"m excited for The Hobbit, too! I was late to the party on all the Lord of the Rings (I didn't watch them until I think all the Director's Cut DVDs came out, when I went on this epic 8234782340 hour marathon of watching ALL things LoTR haha) hoopla, but I'm totally in on it now. I'm a bit iffy on Snow White and the Huntsman, but only because I really don't like Kirsten Stewart. She was a fine actress earlier in her career, but after this Twilight thing I just...can't get into her. Hopefully the rest of the movie will make up for it -- and who knows, maybe she'll change my mind!

My Top Ten

I like the way you interpreted this week's prompt! Many of the books I wanted to see as movies have actually been purchased by producers or are already in production anyway! I'm excited for a bunch of these: The Hunger Games (obvi!), The Hobbit, Life of Pi, and against my own better judgement, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Great list. Thanks for sharing! :)

I really want to read Abraham Lincoln, looks so good. Also, Tyler Perry as Alex Cross? Does not compute

Tanya Patrice | May 1, 2012 10:45 AM | Reply

@dixie - I'mma have to be front & center checking out Tyler Perry as Alex Cross - I just don't see it either.

I'm really excited for Abraham Lincoln. I've got Life of Pi on my reading list but I didn't know it was going to be a movie!

Susanne | May 1, 2012 1:58 PM | Reply

I have not read the Alex Cross series yet. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter looks great. Thanks for stopping by!

Great list! I haven't read any of the recent Bourne novels (pretty much stuck to the original trilogy) but I saw the teaser trailer for the new movie and it's intriguing enough to check out! I am also extremely excited for The Hobbit--is it December yet?

Here's my TTT for this week: http://www.rulethewaves.net/blog/?p=4408

I really want to see The Hobbit, too! And my best friend loves the Odd Thomas books, so I need to read that first sometime soon before the movie comes out! Great list, and thanks so much for stopping by my TTT! ;)

I'm looking forward to Breaking Dawn pt 2 and the new Bourne movie, even though I've never read the books. We are reading Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer for book club this month and I am super excited about it!

Asheley (@BookwormAsheley) | May 1, 2012 8:47 PM | Reply

Your lists are ALWAYS so much fun! I have a date with my real-life bookish friends to see Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter, which we have all (mostly) read - there are a few stragglers that don't read but tag along. It looks fun and I loved the book. I'm re-reading The Hobbit right now, slowly, along with other books. I'm reading along with two other online bookish friends and we're talking about it thru email threads...so we'll be ready for the movie when it comes out. I can be such the nerd sometimes but AAHH it's worth it for the books!

Great list, great spin on the list. I love this blog so much. ;)

Although Breaking Dawn is my least favorite Twilight novel, I'll still head to the theater in November for Part 2. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter looks interesting.

@Asheley - thanks for the compliment :-) I wish I had bookish friends that would read the books & come to these movies with me - you're a lucky girl :-)

I definitely have to see The Hobbit! Should probably read the book again first, although that might make it harder to watch the movie. ;)

Excellent Choices. There are def. some I am planning on seeing. Snow White looks fantastic and of course Breaking Dawn Part 2. I loved your picture at the beginning. Great Job.

I have been surfing online more than three hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours 10 Must See Book To Movie Adaptations in 2012 | Girlxoxo. It is pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all site owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the net will be much more useful than ever before.
