10 Books On My Summer 2012 Reading List

I've always created a seasonal reading list for upcoming Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring months. And now with summer rolling around - I actually expect to have quite a bit of down time since I'm only teaching 2 classes, twice a week. So the plan is to finish up my remaining reading challenges.

10 Books On My Summer 2012 Reading List

So here are 10 books I intend to get through over the summer.

Reading the 2011 Award Winners Book Challenge

Who Fears DeathSalvage the Bones

Who Fears Death, Nnedi Okorafor. Winner of the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.
In a far future, post-nuclear-holocaust Africa, genocide plagues one region. The aggressors, the Nuru, have decided to follow the Great Book and exterminate the Okeke. But when the only surviving member of a slain Okeke village is brutally raped, she manages to escape, wandering farther into the desert. She gives birth to a baby girl with hair and skin the color of sand and instinctively knows that her daughter is different. She names her daughter Onyesonwu, which means "Who Fears Death?" in an ancient African tongue. (Amazon| Goodreads)

Salvage the Bones, Jesmyn Ward. Winner of the 2011 National Book Award for Fiction.
A hurricane is building over the Gulf of Mexico, threatening the coastal town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, and Esch's father is growing concerned. A hard drinker, largely absent, he doesn't show concern for much else. Esch and her three brothers are stocking food, but there isn't much to save. Lately, Esch can't keep down what food she gets; she's fourteen and pregnant. Her brother Skeetah is sneaking scraps for his prized pitbull's new litter, dying one by one in the dirt. Meanwhile, brothers Randall and Junior try to stake their claim in a family long on child's play and short on parenting. (Amazon| Goodreads)

The 2014 Winter Olympics Reading Challenge

Let The Right One In (Book)Germline

Let the Right One In, John Ajvide Lindqvist, Ebba Segerberg (Translator). Set in Sweden. It is autumn 1981 when the inconceivable comes to Blackeberg, a suburb in Sweden. The body of a teenage boy is found, emptied of blood, the murder rumored to be part of a ritual killing. Twelve-year-old Oskar is personally hoping that revenge has come at long last - revenge for the bullying he endures at school, day after day. But the murder is not the most important thing on his mind. A new girl has moved in next door---a girl who has never seen a Rubik's Cube before, but who can solve it at once. There is something wrong with her, though, something odd. And she only comes out at night. (Amazon| Goodreads)

Germline, T.C. McCarthy. Set in Kazakhstan. War is Oscar Wendell's ticket to greatness. A reporter for The Stars and Stripes, he has the only one way pass to the front lines of a brutal war over natural resources buried underneath the icy, mineral rich mountains of Kazakhstan. But war is nothing like he expected. Heavily armored soldiers battle genetically engineered troops hundreds of meters below the surface. The genetics-the germline soldiers-are the key to winning this war, but some inventions can't be un-done. Some technologies can't be put back in the box. (Amazon| Goodreads)

The Angel MakersA Million Suns

The Angel Makers, Jessica Gregson. Released December 2011.
When the men of a remote Hungarian village go off to war in 1916, the women left behind realize their lives are much better without them. Suddenly, they are not being beaten; they have time for friendships; they even find romance with the injured Italian soldiers staying just outside of town. For Sari, an intelligent girl who's always been an outcast (her fellow villagers suspect her of being a witch because of her medical knowledge), it's the first time in her life she's had friends. When the men return at war's end, the freedom Sari and the others have enjoyed is suddenly snatched from them, and they realize they need to do whatever it takes to hold onto it. (Amazon| Goodreads)

A Million Suns (Across the Universe #2), Beth Revis. Released January, 2012.

They must work together to unlock a puzzle that was set in motion hundreds of years earlier, unable to fight the romance that's growing between them and the chaos that threatens to tear them apart. Both the Chaos Walking and Iron Fey series are ones I need to read, I keep hearing fantastic things about them! I feel like I'm in the minority since Before I Fall wasn't my favourite book, but I do love Lauren Oliver's writing - so lyrical and smooth! And I hope you like A Million Suns, I loved it and thought it was fantastic second book in a trilogy (though how I'm going to wait for Shades of Earth until January, I'll never know).

Happy reading :)

I've been hearing great things about Salvage the Bones! Hope you enjoy it. And I've really been meaning to tackle The Knife of Never Letting Go, but I'm trying to stick to using the library and they don't have it! (One of the downsides of a university library!)

Happy summer reading! :)

I read Before I Fall a few months ago and it was really good.

However, I am very eager to get my hands on a copy of A Million Suns. I listened to the audiobook for Across the Universe a few weeks ago as well and I love the story.

YES, YES, YES to The Knife of Never Letting Go and Chaos Walking in general. I love a few of the other books on this list, but that one?! AHHHHHH, I have no words for its brilliance and how much it made me feel ALL the emotions. I do hope you love it as much as I did!

You know, I need to do this for my challenges because once the bar is over, I'm going to have to kick it into gear to get them done. My summer reading list will consist on whatever books I can read in the month of August

Oh, A Million Suns! I really need to get to reading that one as well because I absolutely loved Across the Universe! And I've heard such amazing things about Before I Fall that I definitely need to get to reading it soon. Fantastic list and thanks for stopping by :)

The Chaos Walking trilogy was such a good read, as was the Sarah Maclean.

Grad Student @ Young Adult Fiction and Whiskey Sours | June 20, 2012 1:04 PM | Reply

I also want to read Before I Fall- I love Lauren Oliver's other books. I will be interested to hear if you like the Iron Fey series, I find them boilerplate YA fantasy (but there is a saving grace in great supporting characters- Puck and Grimalkin, the cat). I liked the talking cat way more than I liked Meghan. It can't be a good sign! But I have to say the series is addicting, and I read them all :-)

Lauren @ Story Bound | June 20, 2012 8:18 PM | Reply

Great lists! A Rogue By Any Other Name looks good and I've heard great things about The Knife of Never Letting Go

The Knife of Never Letting Go is one I need to add to my list. I've heard so many good things about it but mercifully have not heard any spoilers or information that makes me feel I've already read it.

Looks like a good plan. I've been wanting to read Patrick Ness' trilogy and also Lauren Oliver's Before I Fall.

So many good books, so little time!!

P.S. Have I ever mentioned how much I LOVE the look of your blog - all your original graphics, pictures, different fonts - I just love your design talents. That is NOT my area of expertise at all, so I find all the more impressive! I was very pleased with myself when I figured out how to make a simple graphic for my Big Book Summer Challenge :)

@Sue - thanks so much for the compliment about the graphics. I usually just take a picture with the digie camera, size & photoshop it a little bit, and write the headline with a font from a free font site.
