Reading the 2011 Nebula Award Nominees

The Nebula Awards are given each year by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), for the best science fiction/ fantasy fiction published in the United States during the previous year. The 2011 awards will be presented on May 19, 2012, so I'm going to try and read as many of the novels as I can in the Best Novel and Young Adult categories, and then make my predictions as to who will win - and I'm notoriously BAD at predicting award winners! So the nominees are ...

I am guilty, I haven't gotten to any of them. I have been so behind on my book reading lately. I look forward to seeing what you think of Among Others. I have wanted to read it for a while now. I am going to have to follow you now!

I just finished Everybody Sees the Ants a couple of weeks ago and finally was brave enough to try and post my thoughts this week. It's a YA Contemporary, which is a new genre for me, about bullying. It's fantastic in terms of characterization, but MAN OH MAN that story was tough for me to get through. I DO recommend it to people, though, because it is very relevant. (And WOW Daughter of Smoke & Bone - LOVED that one). I was also thinking of trying out Mechanique at some point relatively soon - I like the steampunk sound of it.

Thanks for sharing these! I'm always looking for new SF and being totally overwhelmed.

That said, Mieville...I mean, I'm not surprised, but I'm gonna need a while to recover from "Perdido Street Station," and I read that over a year ago.

Tanya Patrice | April 24, 2012 2:14 PM | Reply

@Laura - I agree with Mieville - I needed some time to recover from Kraken, and Embassytown was more of the same - fantastic world building ... but just too much, too complicated, too many characters, too much going on.
