Reading and Then Some

Do you take notes while you're reading? What about after you finish a book and before you pick up the next one - what are some of the things you do to record & remember what you've read? Below is a list of the extra things I do while I'm reading a book and after I've finished reading it.

What Do You Do After You're Finished Reading A Book?

While Reading ...

1. I add the book to my Goodreads profile as "now reading." I'm not really tracking the exact date but I like to get an accurate month.

2. If it's an eBook (I use the Windows 8 Kindle app on my laptop), I add notes when a plot surprise makes me gasp or exclaim out loud, and highlight memorable quotes.

3. I update my 2013 Google reading map with a location (if applicable).

After I've Finished Reading ...

4. I add a review to Goodreads, and rate the book.

5. Copy my review to Amazon.com - I wish I had started doing this a long time ago.

6. Write up a book discussion here on Girlxoxo.com, and save it as a draft.

7. Add books to reading challenges - I use Evernote to keep track of what I've read for each of the 14 challenges I'm doing this year.

Only then do I reach for another book.

I'd love to hear about your process. Do you start another book immediately after you've finished? Do you use Goodreads? Do you add your review to Amazon?

I think the only thing I do consistently is mark my books on Goodreads. I try hard to take notes when I'm reading, but I get so engrossed in the story that I truly suck at taking notes. I do take time to highlight anything that really stands out if I'm reading on my Kindle.

@Jennifer - I don't take notes while I'm reading either, as I find it takes me out of the experience. If it's an eBook (and I rarely read those), I usually just note something really obvious - like when there's a plot twist I didn't see coming.

The map idea is awesome, I've never thought of doing that. So many places you end up reading about, even ones you hadn't known from the summary. I tend to compile my notes, write the review, and take the book from my GR currently reading.

@Charlie - this is the first year I've been really consistent with the map - which is a fantastic visual. As soon as I get to the point in a book where they mention the setting (if it isn't fantasy), I put it in the map, otherwise I'll forget.

I do update my Goodreads as I finish books, and I always give them a rating pretty much immediately (I go back later and fill in the review once I've reviewed the book on my blog). I occasionally use the highlight function on my Kindle to mark quotes I like, but I don't tend to take notes other than that. Love the map idea!

I love the idea of a Google reading map! Very cool! I think it would be neat to look at by the year's end to see where my books took place. :)

I also mark the book I'm reading as "Currently Reading" on Goodreads, so it updates the widget I use on my blog.

Most of the time, I write up my review on GoodReads and then use the code to "blog this review" since that quickly and easily provides me with the book's cover image and a link to the book and the author on GoodReads. My blog is very streamlined though and I don't use all the cool graphics and extras that you use (I love yours, I just don't have the patience to do it myself!)

Usually my review posts are just a review, so I leave it at that, but if a particular book inspires a discussion post instead of a review (like my recent post on DNF books), I'll do a short review on GoodReads with a star rating and then write up the discussion post separately. Occasionally I just don't feel like blogging about or reviewing a particular book, but I will always at least give it a star rating on GoodReads when I mark it as "read."

I almost always write up my review/post before starting a new book, but occasionally I do jump right into my next pick, like I did last night!

What I do is similar to what many of the others have said. On Goodreads I continuously update my reading progress and make small notes with it about how I'm finding the book, usually about if the book is keeping my attention and what I think of some of the characters.

When writing my reviews, I write it up first on Goodreads, if the book is like amazing I will probably do a lot of gushing first then come back to finish it when I can think properly. Afterwards I copy the review onto my blog or anywhere else.

One of the things I hope to do from reading your post is possibly highlight and make notes about those amazing moments in a book. I really like that particular idea!

When I start a book I add it to my Goodreads "Now reading" status and use it as my virtual bookmark along the way. I also add it to my Library on my blog and on the side bar. When I finish I try to bust out a review while it is still fresh in my mind. I also update my statue on my Challenge page. I post the review on Goodreads and Audible and link to the challenge host. Trying to keep it simple. I love that you keep notes while reading I should do that.

Wow. I never even thought of the Google map idea! I love it! Thanks for sharing, Tanya! You have such an amazing, elaborate reading process. Go you!

I love the idea of a map with the settings, a great way to actually *see* where your reading takes you. :)

That reading map is truly a brilliant idea ♥ And I wish could remember to consistently add my reviews to Amazon (booo me!) I do take notes as I'm reading of any thoughts I have on the writing style, plot or characters. And I religiously update my Goodreads...not so much my status as I go along by when I start reading a book & my review once I'm done!

Oh and sometimes I can start a book RIGHT after I'm done reading one but other times (if the book I finished was just too good) I have a book hangover and I need a day or 2.

I love the idea of a reading map! I honestly don't think I've ever seen one before, but now I love the idea and want to do the same thing. I always try to mark a book as currently reading, but I'm not very consistent with much else. I WISH I was better at writing a review for a book before starting a new book. I'm terrible at this! And next thing I know, I'll have finished four books and need to write reviews for all of them. Ugh! I wish I had a better system for taking notes while reading. I hate stopping to write something down because it interrupts the flow of reading, so I usually just try to write a few things down in a draft blog post (like random thoughts or bullet points) but I don't immediately write the full review. Love how you have a system that works for you :)

I do take notes while reading, highlighting quotes and passages that move me to tears or make me laugh, or even ones that make me question the character or the motivation. As soon as I finish a book I update my excel spreadsheet with the title, author, date, number of pages, challenge category and rating. I then rate it on goodreads and add an inital thought or two instead of the full review. (I generally add reviews to GR in batches, after they've been posted on my blog.)

I always let a book sit for a day or so before reviewing it, but I don't let myself read more than two books before writing at least one of the reviews, because I don't want to mix up storylines or characters.

I occasionally post my reviews to Amazon, though not too often. I really should start doing that more.

kimbacaffeinate | March 3, 2013 10:04 AM | Reply

Ok, let's see I track on GR as I am reading it, then when I am done I rate it on GR, and advise review to post soon. I then write my review and place it in publish cue. If it's a book for edelweiss i copy and paste review on to their site. When review publishes, I copy and paste it on to GR, Amaazon, B&N and add image and links to Tumbr, pinterest, facebook and google+
I have a rule that until my review is written I cannot start another book, and this keeps me very organized. I done my review posts for March and am working on April.

Disco Diva | March 27, 2013 4:00 PM | Reply

I use goodreads. I love it! I don't take notes at all and sometimes I wish I did.

I try to do a Goodreads review immediately while it is still fresh but I almost always rate it.
