10 Tips on Blogging That Will Help You Win Friends & Influence People

The blog post title is a bit of a pun on the book, How to Win Friends & Influence People - so these tips aren't really going to help you do that. But listen, if you have a book blog, and you want more than just to keep a record of the books you've read, then read on for some tips on how to get more traffic, and stand out in a crowd.

10 Tips on Book Blogging That Will Help You Win Friends & Influence People

1. Looks Matter

Do NOT use a stock template without customizing it in some way, otherwise, your blog will be indistinguishable from all the rest. Take the time to learn basic HTML and CSS - make sure your font size & your blog is readable, and easy to navigate.

2. Reviews Only = B-zzz-oring

Book bloggers are UNIQUE because content/ reviews, never become stale since people don't just read the latest books. But it has to be mentioned time & time again to stay current.
For example, a book I really liked is Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion. A few places I've discussed it:

3. Find 1 Way to be Social and DOMINATE

It could be Twitter, Facebook, Commenting, Pinterest - whatever. Just don't do many different ways and be mediocre in them all. Instead pick 1 (or more if you have time) - and spend a lot of TIME doing it, but make sure that you are getting results i.e. that you have measurable goals. It could be an increase in comments, subscribers, twitter followers. retweets etc.

4. Get Inspired by Events Around You

For example, put up a spring, summer, fall & winter reading list when the season comes around. Or The Pulitzer Prize committee didn't award a prize for Fiction this year (2012) - do like Chris Bohjalian (author of The Night Strangers), and put up your own list - Pulitzer Committee and Jury Options - Plenty of Choices {A List of 8}. Or, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is coming out in June. Review that book, or some other vampire books during that month. Make some lists that reference the movie - for example, 5 Books That Are Better Than Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.

5. Use Blog Memes to Get Traffic to Your Blog

Make these memes your own with a catchy title for your post and then COMMENT like crazy on the other participants posts. Eg. this blog post & most of my posts on Tuesdays are lists for Top 10 Tuesday. My book reviews are part of It's Monday What Are you Reading (but I never use that title). Just adding your link to the meme won't do much - COMMENT on the other participants too ... I can't stress that enough.

6. Schedule & Plan Ahead

This takes the stress off more than anything else - and your blog posts will be better too.

7. Do NOT Only Review the Latest Books

People tend to comment on books they've read. If it's always the latest and greatest - chances are they haven't read it yet - hence, there won't be much to say. So stop falling into the "advanced reader copy" trap.

8. Get Friendly With Other Bloggers

Friendly means you interact with them and they do the same with you - especially through comments & the occasional email. You'll be able to link to each other, guest post for each other when necessary, and you'll have somewhere to vent if you need to - don't do it on your blog.

9. Basic Blogging ANALYSIS is a MUST

Obviously you have Google Analytics, PMetrics, or some other program that measures your website visitor statistics. But don't just look at home many unique visitors & page views you have. ANALYZE. Eg. Check your highest traffic day for the last month - what was special about it? Can you write about that topic again? Or was your post linked to by a certain website? What are the days you get the lowest traffic - why? Is it that you don't post on those days? Or you don't comment on blogs on those days? ... But let's not obsess okay - look at these things once a week tops!

10. Make Your Blog a Place You Would Be Proud to Tell Everyone About

When I was interviewing for jobs, people Googled me and found my food products reviews website (iAteApie.net). I was able to leverage it into a positive since it looks professional, the reviews are well written, personable, yet still professional in tone - not snarky & bitchy even when I didn't like a product - and I could show potential employers that when I'm passionate about something, I'm detailed, thorough & well-read on everything related to it.

So, TODAY - do 1 thing to promote your blog that you wouldn't normally do). Examples - comment on 20 blog posts; Re-tweet 10 blog posts you liked today; Interact with 2 of your favorite authors in some way - either add them on twitter & tweet them a message, or subscribe to their blog if they have an active one. Are you up for the challenge?

Challenge accepted ;)

I completely agree with number 7. I don't typically comment on reviews if I haven't read the book because there isn't much for me to say. Looks definitely matter too, one thing that really gets me is when people use a dark background and light font. It's so hard on my eyes I end up not reading it.

Excellent point in #7, that had never occurred to me before, but you're absolutely right! I think it's important to find a balance of old(ish) and new books.

Great list. I hadn't actually thought about #7, but it is so true.

Thanks for stopping by my blog :)

Great tips. Thanks for stopping by my blog, too. I think I'll take you up on the challenge do something different today... I've been neglecting twitter recently!

Love that last one. When I first started blogging, I was scared about having it public because ANYONE can read it- parents, friends, teachers, employers! But then I realized, if I make it good, I shouldn't care who stumbles upon it. So I try to make every post thoughtful and presentable (so nothing snarky, overly personal, offensive, etc.). Great list!

Thank you so much for the great tips! I definitely accept your challenge. Your visit was much appreciated.

Very good tips. Your comments about reviews are so true. I usually stop following blogs that only write reviews because a lot of the time I haven't read the books they are reviewing and frankly I really don't have time to read long reviews.

Very thoughtful but TRUE post! I love the advice that you gave, especially your tip to use Meme’s to get more followers. I always thought Meme’s were fun but I had no idea the perks of participating. I get so much traffic from The Story Siren’s In My Mailbox post! Thanks for sharing!

i especially like the tip about not just blogging about new books. sometimes it seems like you see the same book reviewed over and over and over. great list!

Patricia | April 17, 2012 4:40 PM | Reply

I really like 7. I often have issues with that, because I seldomly read the books that just hit the shelves and instead rush through older series until I'm up to date (read the whole Dark Hunter series last year, also BDB, Breeds, Otherworld, Psy Changeling.. XD) and I see that most bloggers don't, which is why I was sometimes rather hesitant about reviewing those titles.

These are great tips. I agree with you about participating in memes to get traffic, but I also like to do it for something different than just a review. And today I took your advice and commented on almost 20 blogs. Will see about the rest.

Great tips! I'm a newbie blogger, so it's always nice to read advice like this! I've worked hard at commenting, so I feel like I'm already kind of doing well with #3!

I'm loving your blog BTW! New follower! ;) And thanks so much for stopping by my blog!

Some really interesting tips Tanya! I agree commenting is so important, I need to be much better at scheduling ahead though!

Awesome list. I think your list is pretty unique and thorough. I think it is great advice to mention not reviewing just recent releases. I think this is solid not just because of the comment part. When a book is released, the review probably can be found on at least 10 blogs on the same day and tons more that week. People will only click on the first couple or so. It's exciting to get new releases but it is important to be unique even in reviews. Great post.

Ashley | April 18, 2012 4:27 AM | Reply

Thanks for the tips! I particularly agree with #7. I've been browsing a lot of book blogs lately and there are just so many reviews about books I haven't even heard of since they're so new (or unreleased).

Earlier I was trying to find other reviews by bloggers about an older, but well known book (to compare opinions), and I just couldn't find any.

Thanks for the tips!

I love your number 3. I am going to try and dominate commenting on the posts I like rather than giving in to Twitter just yet.

Tanya Patrice | April 19, 2012 9:18 PM | Reply

@Epiphany - I can't do much on Twitter either, and I much prefer leaving comments :-)

Tanya Patrice | April 19, 2012 9:20 PM | Reply

@Renee - I don't exactly broadcast this blog either, but I definitely want it to be a place I'm not embarassed about if someone mentions it.

OH this list is so good. I love your personality and your way with words! I think you have something special with #2,3, and 4. I've bookmarked this page so I will remember to come back and read it again!

Miranda | April 24, 2012 9:41 PM | Reply

Wow, very helpful. I agree with 7. I have never wanted to do just new releases. I have the hardest time wtih 6. Planning is not me. lol. But I try, though it usually fails. haha. And Google Analytics hated me and told me I was doing the code wrong even though I put it where it told me too. :( I gave up. Whatever I do what I want. haha.
