Reluctant Reading

There are certain types of books I don't like to read, so I made a list of 10 books in 5 categories ... but to be honest, I cheated on the books I included. They loosely fit the category so please HELP - give me your suggestions, so I'll stop my cheating ways :-)

I'm A Reluctant Reader of Certain Types of Books {A Cheating Challenge to Myself}

1. I do NOT like to read books (or watch) movies about WARS - so I challenge myself to read ...
Cheat: these books aren't about a "real" war

The Zombie Survival GuideWorld War Z

The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection From The Living Dead, Max Brooks. The Zombie Survival Guide is your key to survival against the hordes of undead who may be stalking you right now. Fully illustrated and exhaustively comprehensive, this book covers everything you need to know, including how to understand zombie physiology and behavior, the most effective defense tactics and weaponry, ways to outfit your home for a long siege, and how to survive and adapt in any territory or terrain.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, Max Brooks. The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time.

2. I do NOT like to watch musicals or read books where MUSIC plays a prominent role - so I challenge myself to read ...
Cheat: these are short illustrated books (and about violinists so my step-son - who plays the violin - can read them as well).

Before There Was MozartRed Bird Sings

Before There Was Mozart: The Story of Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-George, Lesa Cline-Ransome, James E. Ransome (Illustrator). This inspiring story tells how Joseph, the only child of a black slave and her white master, becomes "the most accomplished man in Europe." After traveling from his native West Indies to study music in Paris, young Joseph is taunted about his skin color. Despite his classmates' cruel words, he continues to devote himself to his violin, eventually becoming conductor of a whole orchestra. Joseph begins composing his own operas, which everyone acknowledges to be magnifique.

Red Bird Sings: The Story of Zitkala-Sa, Native American Author, Musician, and Activist, Gina Capaldi, Gina Capaldi. This is a picture book biography of Zitkala-a, born Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, a Native American woman at the turn of the 19th century. Zitkala-a was a writer, editor, musician, teacher, and political activist in a time when even basic education was uncommon among Native Americans

3. I do NOT like NON-FICTION - so I challenge myself to read ...
Cheat: Photo and Illustrated books
MLK: A Celebration in Word and ImageSit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down

MLK: A Celebration in Word and Image. A striking collection of twenty-nine black-and-white images combined with powerful quotations by Dr. Martin Luthur King Jr.

Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down, Andrea Davis Pinkney, Brian Pinkney (Illustrator). A picture book celebration of the 50th anniversary of the momentous Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in, when four college kids staged a peaceful protest that became a defining moment in the struggle for racial equality and the growing civil rights movement.

4. I do NOT read enough books set in other COUNTRIES - so I challenge myself to read ...
Cheat: I could have picked other less well-known countries - but I do in fact to plan to do so.

Graffiti MoonMistress of Rome

Graffiti Moon, Cath Crowley. It's the end of Year 12. Lucy's looking for Shadow, the graffiti artist everyone talks about. His work is all over the city, but he is nowhere. Ed, the last guy she wants to see at the moment, says he knows where to find him. He takes Lucy on an all-night search to places where Shadow's thoughts about heartbreak and escape echo around the city walls. But the one thing Lucy can't see is the one thing that's right before her eyes.

Mistress of Rome, Kate Quinn. Thea is a slave girl from Judaea, passionate, musical, and guarded. Purchased as a toy for the spiteful heiress Lepida Pollia, Thea will become her mistress's rival for the love of Arius the Barbarian, Rome's newest and most savage gladiator. His love brings Thea the first happiness of her life-that is quickly ended when a jealous Lepida tears them apart.

Do you read books that are outside your comfort zone or do you stick to what you know you like? Any recommendations for me in the above categories?

That such a good idea- cheat but still achieve goals! This is an idea I'll have to remember in future.

I don't really like Non-Fiction either, but I've enjoyed a few autobiographies. This is my cheat, in a way!

I don't read outside my comfort zone so I'm doing a challenge or two to combat that. But OMG you don't like musicals? ::Tears:: Amazing that you have that book on Le Mozart Noir. I have a Bachelor's and Master's in Opera and no one told us about him in all that time. Can you believe that?? Hmph.

What a great idea! I've got several types of books I don't like to read or just don't read enough of.

What an interesting and intriguing twist on today's topic!

So, let's see...

Books about war: The Book Thief (WW2), Things That Save Us (WW2), The Hunger Games trilogy (the third book is all about war).

Music: Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson - the playlists in the book are awesome!! I read it on a road trip and couldn't wait to get home and check out all the songs!

Nonfiction for those who don't like nonfiction: definitely my #1 choice would be The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson - reads like a suspense novel.

Books Set in Other Countries - so many good ones it's hard to choose! Let's see...a few of my favorites: Little Bee by Chris Cleave (Nigeria and England), The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar (India), Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly (France).

Great idea! I might do something similar sometime.

Great idea! I like the cheats, too. Like you, I'm not a big war-story fan; not if it's real wars, anyway. Once it's removed into fantasy I can take it a little better. :)

This is such a great idea... I should challenge myself to step out of my comfort reading zone. A book about War that isn't really about WAR is The Book Thief. Have you read that one yet? If not, I highly recommend it! I am also not a big fan of non-fiction. I should find something that looks appealing. Sit-in actually looks pretty interesting!

If you want another nonfiction one , try Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. I can't recommend this book enough times-it reads like Pulitzer-Prize-winning fiction. Also, I hear that Virtuosity by Jessica Martinez is a musical book that has some pretty spiffy writing...

Thanks for the suggestions everyone - especially the non-fiction!

This is a stretch when it comes to books about music, but for sci-fi fans, I recommend Sharon Shinn's Archangel books. They're about a world where angels and humans coexist and rely on music to communicate with their god (who is actually a spaceship...it gets complicated). I was always impressed with how Shinn manages to convey the beauty and power of singing on the page. Plus the love stories are sizzling. ;)

This is why I started the Eclectic Reader Challenge. I consider myself to have fairly wide reading tastes but there are genres I avoid, like science fiction. It doesn't hurt to push yourself a little now and again - even just a bit :)

I don't really have any recommendations except that I'm a big fan of reading for enjoyment. I've spent enough time (school, college, etc) reading for requirements. I'm now at the age (and health) that all my reading from here on out is going to be for me.

In that vein, I want to encourage you to cheat away! *g* Just the fact that you're willing to challenge yourself is commendable. And there's something to be said about picture books - they have oft times hidden depths and can also be shared with younger audiences.

However, if I do come across or remember about a book in any of your categories, I'll drop in and let you know.

There is a young adult novel that would fit into the music category though. Fairest by Gail Carson Levine. I tried to read it (the author of Ella Enchanted, wonderful book) but it's hard to read verse that's supposed to be sung to a tune with no real idea of what tune the characters could possibly be using. It's just very hard to picture in my head what they're supposed to be sounding like. That's why I don't usually like to read books with a heavy emphasis on songs and verses. If it came with a soundtrack, on a cd or something it would be way different, but of course that would drive the price way up and books are pricey enough now adays.

Good luck on your self challenge! :)
