Since I already have at least 10 library books out for the month (see November Library Loot (Part 1) and Part 2), there would be no more book pick-ups for me. Instead, I went to the library looking for something for my 8 year old step-son who doesn't like to read (he doesn't hate it, but would just rather be watching tv).
November Library Loot for a Young Reluctant Reader
Since he loves sharing facts, I thought that he might be interested in books that teach him something. The story books we've been picking just don't seem to be doing it for him, but these 2 books have been a big hit.
An Octopus is Amazing, Patricia Lauber, Holly Keller (Illustrator) .
Here is a charming introduction to the truly amazing octopus [from its intelligence to its ability to change colors to the camouflaging black ink it squirts to escape predators]. Lauber's chatty, fact-filled text makes the book a good read-aloud, and Keller's amusing and colorful drawings enhance it - a perfect match of text and illustration.
Animal Lives: Reptiles (World Book)
Why do reptiles bask in the sun? Which lizards have tongues that are longer than their bodies? What kind of snake can eat animals as large as deer? Read this book to find out!
When he reads, we stop after every page and he tells me the main point(s). We started with The Amazing Octopus, and then moved on to Reptiles. When he read that reptiles were vertebraes - he promptly told me, "you know, the octopus is an invertebrae." I just smiled - so happy that he is actually retaining and remembering the facts from the books.

Aw! This is fabulous. I owe so much to my mum (ex-(unqualified)-librarian) for instilling a love of reading in me from a very young age. These are the most insanely perfect books for boys!
