Kids Library Loot

Since I already have at least 10 library books out for the month (see November Library Loot (Part 1) and Part 2), there would be no more book pick-ups for me. Instead, I went to the library looking for something for my 8 year old step-son who doesn't like to read (he doesn't hate it, but would just rather be watching tv).

November Library Loot for a Young Reluctant Reader

Since he loves sharing facts, I thought that he might be interested in books that teach him something. The story books we've been picking just don't seem to be doing it for him, but these 2 books have been a big hit.

An Octopus is Amazing, Patricia Lauber, Holly Keller (Illustrator) .
Here is a charming introduction to the truly amazing octopus [from its intelligence to its ability to change colors to the camouflaging black ink it squirts to escape predators]. Lauber's chatty, fact-filled text makes the book a good read-aloud, and Keller's amusing and colorful drawings enhance it - a perfect match of text and illustration.

Animal Lives: Reptiles (World Book)
Why do reptiles bask in the sun? Which lizards have tongues that are longer than their bodies? What kind of snake can eat animals as large as deer? Read this book to find out!

When he reads, we stop after every page and he tells me the main point(s). We started with The Amazing Octopus, and then moved on to Reptiles. When he read that reptiles were vertebraes - he promptly told me, "you know, the octopus is an invertebrae." I just smiled - so happy that he is actually retaining and remembering the facts from the books.

Aw! This is fabulous. I owe so much to my mum (ex-(unqualified)-librarian) for instilling a love of reading in me from a very young age. These are the most insanely perfect books for boys!

I'm writing this with a big goofy grin in my face - I remember sitting with my folks reading books I love. I'm so thrilled you found something that he's interested in reading. :)

I love this! My oldest is a reluctant reader and I've noticed that she loves non-fiction and comic books. Right now we're reading books about famous people like Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, and Pablo Neruda. Glad to hear you've found some books your stepson enjoys.

I love picking out books for kids and these sound great!

I can relate! My 13-yr old son is also a reluctant reader - he's skilled but would much rather be outside and active. He's not too fond of sitting still!

I don't know your stepson's reading level, but I think at about that same age, my son enjoyed the Horrible Harry series and the Magic Tree House series. Horrible Harry is about a 2nd or 3rd grade boy (don't remember which) who gets into trouble a lot - lots of good boy humor!

Magic Tree House is a fabulous series for early readers - suspenseful, magic, very compelling - about a brother and sister who travel through time in their tree house.

Good luck - hope he enjoys the books you picked out!

Thanks for the recommendations Sue!! We'll try the Horrible Harry series - sounds like fun, and we've read some of The Magic Treehouse books.
