Do Better Computer-ing

In Organizing My Computing Life (my February Monthly Challenge), I needed to make a list of the computer programs I use most regularly. My list is a just a basic document saved in "My Documents" on the computer and synced using GoodSync, to Skydrive (i.e. saved online in the cloud so I can access it from any device). Most of the programs I use are FREE (open source).

My Essential Computer Programs {Do Better "Computer-ing" Challenge}

All programs are open source (free) unless otherwise specified.

    Antivirus & Malaware

  • AVG (antivirus)
  • Malaware Bytes
  • CCleaner
  • Comodo Cleaning Essentials (lives on external hard drive)
  • Backup

  • Goodsync ($$$ - sync documents & backup photos to Sydrive (online))
  • Blogging

  • Adobe Photoshop (Graphics program - $$$)
  • HTML Kit (HTML Editor)
  • Firefox (Browser of choice)
  • Filezilla (FTP program for uploading files to website)
  • Communications

  • Adobe Reader (for PDF files)
  • Lotus Symphony (instead of paying for Microsoft Word)
  • Skype
  • Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Media

  • BitTorrent (personal downloading pleasure)
  • iTunes (music)
  • Spotify (music)
  • VLC (to watch movies)
  • Overdrive (audiobooks)
  • Organization

  • eWallet ($$$ - to record passwords & logins - synced to mobile version, but thinking of using mobile app only)
  • Evernote (Free edition - for blogging & other things - still experimenting)
  • Windows 8 Apps
  • Zentomi (RSS feed reader)
  • Nook App (eReader app)
  • Kindle App (eReader app - although I haven't actually read any eBooks yet)

Photoshop, Goodsync and eWallet are the only programs I use that aren't free - and they are worth every cent!

What are some computer programs that you gladly pay to use?

OMG! I have so many too! Let's see. I love and use Photosync for transferring pics from my phone to my computer (FREE). Microsoft Office is the Best. Get the student version. It's cheaper and has the same stuff as the pro version. I am paying big $$ for Carbonite as my backup (number 2) I need to figure out how to do a backup on my blog. Bloggiesta!

I have looked and am not sure what is out there for anti-virus for an Apple.. it's like impossible to find!

@Angie from what I understand, they don't have many if any viruses targeted at Apple products (since they have about 5% of the market share), so they don't make anti-virus programs for them - yet.

Try ClamXav for a Mac anti virus. :)
