3 New Releases On Our Fall Reading List

Do you tend to read more new release or backlist books? We tend to do a mixture of both – but mainly focus on backlist. Still – those shiny new releases can’t help but catch our eye. Here are 3 on our radar this Fall.

I kind of made a subconscious decision not to pay attention to new releases over the summer so I would stay focused on finishing my backlog. That wasn’t too hard because there’s really only one new release this Fall that I’m dying to read as soon as possible.

Ninth House, Leigh Bardugo

I just purchased the audio book of this the other day. This is, hands down, my most anticipated release of Fall 2019. I am so excited to read this. It’s Bardugo’s first ‘adult’ book and it’s garnered praise from Stephen King, Lev Grossman, and Joe Hill. I suspect we’ll see a bit more of her dark side in this writing.

I mentioned this in 4 Books We’re Reading for #WickedGoodReads Month that I read The Institute, Stephen King, which was released in the Fall, so I can’t put that book on this list – as much as I want to because it was so good. These are 2 other recently released – or soon to be released – novels on my radar.

Olive Again (Olive Kitteridge #2), Elizabeth Strout

Published Oct. 15h. I read Olive Kitteridge a few years ago and loved the dark, depressing theme and sarcastic main character and I’m so excited to see that Olive is back. I almost wish I had time to re-read the first Olive book, but I don’t and I’m hoping it won’t be necessary.

Olive struggles to understand not only herself and her own life but the lives of those around her in the town of Crosby, Maine. Whether with a teenager coming to terms with the loss of her father, a young woman about to give birth during a hilariously inopportune moment, a nurse who confesses a secret high school crush, or a lawyer who struggles with an inheritance she does not want to accept, the unforgettable Olive will continue to startle us, to move us, and to inspire moments of transcendent grace.

Children of Virtue & Vengence (Legend of Orisha #2), Tomi Adeyemi

Dec. 3rd. The first book in the Legend of Orisha series, Children of Blood and Bone was one of the Best Books I Read Last Year and I’ve been looking forward to the next book in the series ever since. It’s a meaty fantasy book at 448 pages, and I want to experience it as an audiobook as I did with Children of Blood and Bone, because it was such a unique experience to hear all the names of the people and the places pronounced as the author intended – and it really helped to immerse me even more in the story.

After battling the impossible, Zélie and Amari have finally succeeded in bringing magic back to the land of Orïsha. But the ritual was more powerful than they could’ve imagined, reigniting the powers of not only the maji, but of nobles with magic ancestry, too. Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as they are.
