Award Winners

“Read a book that has won a literary award or a book written by an author who has been recognized in the bookish community.”

Our Choices

Tanya – Looking at The Major Book Award Calendar and the winners from last year, one of the books that I put on my reading list is The Sudden Appearance of Hope, Clare North, which was the winner of The World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.

The Sudden Appearance of Hope (Book)

My name is Hope Arden, and you won’t know who I am. We’ve met before – a thousand times. But I am the girl the world forgets. It started when I was sixteen years old. A slow declining, an isolation, one piece at a time. A father forgetting to drive me to school. A mother setting the table for three, not four. A teacher who forgets to chase my missing homework. A friend who looks straight through me and sees a stranger. No matter what I do, the words I say, the people I hurt, the crimes I commit – you will never remember who I am. That makes my life tricky. But it also makes me dangerous.

Kim – I’m trying to hit two birds with one stone on this one. I’ll be reading American Gods, Neil Gaiman because my book club is also reading it for August. It won the Hugo and Nebula awards in 2002. I actually can’t even believe I haven’t read this one yet and yes, I plan to watch the TV series spin off after I finish it.

Days before his release from prison, Shadow’s wife, Laura, dies in a mysterious car crash. Numbly, he makes his way back home. On the plane, he encounters the enigmatic Mr Wednesday, who claims to be a refugee from a distant war, a former god and the king of America. Together they embark on a profoundly strange journey across the heart of the USA, whilst all around them a storm of preternatural and epic proportions threatens to break.
