The Monthly Motif Reading Challenge theme for January is Diversify Your Reading. The challenge is to read books with a character (or written by an author) of a race, religion, or sexual orientation other than your own.

January 1-15, 2017 is the Dumbledore’s Army Readathon. And there is the yearlong Diversity Reading Challenge with the theme for January being diverse folklore / mythology. They have a fantastic recommended reading list.
