What’s the best book you read this summer?
Tanya – I didn’t read a lot this summer, but I managed to find 3 amazing books which coincidentally were all listened to as audiobooks.
A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman
A grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next
Kim put this on her list of Books That Blew Our Minds last year, so when the audiobook became available I jumped at the chance to listen to it and I wasn’t disappointed. The audiobook narration by George Newbern made the character of Ove come alive! He’s quirky, grumpy, funny and sad. A Man Called Ove will give you ALL the feels. To see Ove come out of his shell and experience love after he thought he wouldn’t ever again – made me tear up.
The Mothers, Brit Bennett
All good secrets have a taste before you tell them, and if we’d taken a moment to swish this one around our mouths, we might have noticed the sourness of an unripe secret, plucked too soon, stolen and passed around before its season.
What a book! Yes – The Mothers left me thinking about the characters long after I had finished reading it. The ending is not neat and tidy … it’s messy and oddly fitting of the book which showed how untidy life is. It also has quite a sad undertone throughout but that’s part of the emotional draw. Oh – and the audiobook narration by Adenrele Ojo is excellent.
Burntown, Jennifer McMahon
Eva grew up watching her father, Miles, invent strange and wonderful things in the small workshop behind their house on the river that runs through their old mill town. But the most important invention of all was the one that Miles claimed came from the mind of Thomas Edison himself–a machine that allowed one to speak with loved ones long passed. Smuggled out of Edison’s laboratory, the blueprints were passed down to Miles, and he’s been using them to protect Eva, her mother, Lily, and her brother, Errol, ever since.
I loved the atmospheric feel of this novel, the character portrayals and the story. McMahon did an outstanding job of tying together murders that occurred in different generations and told an interesting, enigmatic tale. I fell hard for the characters and was caught up in the mystery. The book is memorable and highly recommended.
Kim – After welcoming a baby in May, my reading took a back seat to my family. However, the few books I did read were awesome!
Landline, Rainbow Rowell
Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble; it has been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply — but that almost seems beside the point now. Could a landline to the past be the answer to rekindling their romance?
I picked this one up to try and help myself get out of a reading slump. I thought it would be a light and quick read. I was surprised to enjoy it as much as I did!
Into Thin Air, Jon Kraukauer
A bank of clouds was assembling on the not-so-distant horizon, but journalist-mountaineer Jon Krakauer, standing on the summit of Mt. Everest, saw nothing that “suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down.” He was wrong.
This is the first nonfiction book I’ve read in a very long time. I couldn’t put it down. The whole idea of climbing this mountain and the logistics that go in to it fascinated me. The disaster was devastating and very, very sad to read about.
So, let’s hear it. What’s your fave #Summerread?

Yes to The Mothers – was one of my favorites of last year!

I remember just zipping through Into the Air. It was such a fast-paced thrilling read. Have you seen the movie? I think Jake Gyllenhaal was in it. I see bits of the movie on TV, but have never been able to watch it fully.
Kim
Not yet but I really want to now.
